Abstract

This study focuses on the impact of an oath uttered by an evangelist on the Eben Haezer Buho-Buho Congregation, which is considered a curse and has limited the development of theological education among the congregation. The oath is understood as a punishment for violations that are considered to disrespect sacred values in the community. This study aims to explore the meaning of the oath in a theological context by connecting it to the text of Matthew 18:18, which is often used to legitimize the oath. Using a qualitative case study method, data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that a literal interpretation of Matthew 18:18 strengthens the congregation's belief that the oath has real spiritual power that binds on earth and heaven, creating paralyzing fear. These findings provide a theoretical contribution by enriching the literature on the influence of oaths in the context of Christian communities and offer practical implications for pastoral programs aimed at helping congregations overcome unfounded fears. Although this study focuses on one particular community, this limitation provides an opportunity for further, broader and deeper research, with the aim of developing a more relevant and contextual theological approach in addressing beliefs that hinder the congregation's spiritual and intellectual development.
